When the Next Step Feels Scary: How to Trust That Change Is Leading You Somewhere Better
Have you ever felt called to make a change, but fear immediately showed up to talk you out of it?
Maybe it's a career change.
A move to a new city.
The end of a relationship.
Starting a business.
Or simply choosing a different path than the one you've been walking for years.
You know something inside you is asking for more.
Yet the moment you consider taking action, fear appears.
"What if I fail?"
"What if this is the wrong decision?"
"What if I regret it?"
Sound familiar?
I've asked myself those same questions.
Just over a year ago, I made one of the biggest decisions of my life. I left Canada after more than 30 years and moved back to Uruguay, the country where I was born.
On paper, it didn't make much sense.
I was leaving behind familiarity, comfort, friendships, family, routines, and a life I had spent decades building.
There was no guarantee things would work out.
There was no roadmap.
There was only a feeling.
A deep knowing that it was time.
And that's what I've learned about major life decisions:
The biggest changes rarely come with guarantees.
They come with trust.
Fear Doesn't Mean You're Making the Wrong Decision
One of the biggest misconceptions people have is believing that fear is a sign to stop.
It's not.
Fear often appears when you're standing at the edge of growth.
When you're about to leave your comfort zone.
When you're about to become someone you've never been before.
The question isn't:
"Am I scared?"
The real question is:
"Am I more afraid of staying where I am than moving forward?"
Because sometimes staying is the bigger risk.
We stay in jobs that no longer fulfill us.
We stay in relationships that have run their course.
We stay in situations that drain our energy because they feel familiar.
But familiar doesn't always mean aligned.
Your Body Knows Before Your Mind Does
One thing I've learned through my own journey is to listen to my body, not just my thoughts.
Thoughts can be noisy.
Thoughts can be influenced by fear, doubt, past experiences, and the opinions of others.
But your body often knows the truth before your mind catches up.
Have you ever noticed how some decisions bring a sense of relief, even when they're difficult?
Or how certain situations leave you feeling anxious, heavy, and exhausted?
Your body is constantly communicating with you.
The challenge is learning to trust what it's telling you.
You Don't Need the Whole Plan
This is where many people get stuck.
They want certainty.
They want guarantees.
They want to know every step before taking the first one.
Life doesn't work that way.
When I moved to Uruguay, I didn't know exactly how everything would unfold.
I simply trusted the next step.
And then the next one.
And then the next.
Most of the opportunities, friendships, lessons, and experiences I've had since arriving here could never have been predicted.
They appeared because I was willing to move.
Had I stayed frozen by fear, many of those doors would never have opened.
Trust the Feeling, Not Just the Facts
Sometimes the facts won't make sense.
Sometimes others won't understand your decision.
Sometimes you'll have to trust something that can't be explained logically.
That's where courage comes in.
Not reckless courage.
Conscious courage.
The kind that says:
"I don't have all the answers, but I trust myself enough to take the next step."
A Question Worth Asking
If fear wasn't part of the equation, what decision would you make today?
Take a moment and sit with that question.
You might already know the answer.
Perhaps you've known it for months.
Maybe even years.
Perhaps what's holding you back isn't uncertainty.
Perhaps it's permission.
Permission to trust yourself.
Permission to choose differently.
Permission to create a life that feels aligned with who you are becoming.
Every meaningful change I've made in my life began with uncertainty.
Not certainty.
Uncertainty.
Moving countries.
Changing careers.
Starting over.
Writing and publishing books.
Building my coaching practice.
None of those decisions came with guarantees.
They came with a quiet knowing.
A feeling that staying where I was no longer aligned with who I wanted to become.
If you're standing at a crossroads right now, wondering whether to take the next step, know this:
You don't need to have it all figured out.
You don't need everyone's approval.
You don't need a perfect plan.
You simply need the courage to trust yourself.
Because sometimes the decision that scares you the most is the very one that will set you free.
Why Work With Me?
If this blog resonated with you, perhaps you're standing at a crossroads of your own.
Maybe you're considering a career change.
Maybe you're navigating a major life transition.
Maybe you know something needs to change, but fear keeps pulling you back toward what's familiar.
I understand because I've been there.
As a coach, I don't simply teach theories from a textbook.
I coach through my own experiences.
I've moved countries.
I've started over more than once.
I've navigated uncertainty, career changes, personal challenges, loss, growth, and reinvention.
I've had moments where I questioned myself, moments where I felt stuck, and moments where I had to trust my intuition long before I could see the outcome.
Those experiences have shaped not only who I am as a person, but also how I coach.
What sets me apart is that I walk alongside my clients with both professional coaching tools and real-life experience. I understand what it feels like to stand at the edge of a big decision and wonder whether you're making the right choice.
My role isn't to tell you what to do.
My role is to help you gain clarity, reconnect with your inner wisdom, and move forward with confidence and purpose.
Because sometimes all it takes is one conversation to see your situation from a different perspective.
And sometimes that conversation changes everything.
✨ If you're ready to stop second-guessing yourself and start creating a life that feels aligned, I'd love to connect.
