Starting Over in Midlife Isn’t Starting From Zero
There is something about the words “starting over” that can make us feel as though everything we've done before somehow doesn't count.
Especially in midlife.
Maybe you're considering a career change after decades in the same field.
Perhaps a relationship has ended and you're wondering what life looks like on your own.
Your children have grown and suddenly the role that occupied so much of your life has changed.
Maybe you've moved to a new country, left behind a familiar community, or simply reached a point where you know:
I don't want the next ten years to look exactly like the last ten.
And then fear enters the conversation.
Am I too old to begin again?
What if I make the wrong decision?
Do I really have the energy to rebuild?
I understand those questions more than you might think.
I've Started Over More Than Once
I've lived through several chapters of beginning again.
I left Uruguay as a teenager and built a life in Canada. I later lived in the United States, returned to Canada, and eventually made the decision to come back to Uruguay.
Each transition required adjustment.
Different places. Different routines. Different communities. Different versions of myself.
I've also experienced starting over professionally.
When I left the security and familiarity of a traditional career to pursue coaching, I didn't have everything figured out. I had moments of excitement, but I also had uncertainty.
Building something new took time.
There were setbacks. There were doubts. There were moments when I wondered whether I had made the right decision.
But here's something I understand much more clearly today:
Every time I thought I was starting over, I wasn't actually starting from zero.
I was bringing everything I had learned with me.
Neither Are You
You aren't beginning this chapter empty-handed.
You're bringing years of experience.
You've made difficult decisions before.
You've adapted when life didn't go according to plan.
You've loved.
You've lost.
You've succeeded.
You've made mistakes and learned from them.
You've probably survived situations that an earlier version of you couldn't imagine handling.
All of that comes with you.
Your next chapter doesn't begin at zero.
It begins with wisdom.
Midlife Can Be a Beginning
We hear so much about what we're supposed to have figured out by a certain age.
By now you should know who you are.
You should be settled.
You should be satisfied.
But who decided that?
Life isn't a straight line with one destination.
We evolve.
Our priorities change.
What fulfilled us at 30 may not fulfill us at 50.
And sometimes the most courageous thing we can do is acknowledge that something no longer fits instead of spending another decade pretending that it does.
Starting again doesn't mean your previous life was a mistake.
It means you're allowing yourself to evolve.
You Don't Need to Know Exactly What Comes Next
Perhaps you're reading this because you know something needs to change, but you can't yet define what that change should be.
That's okay.
You don't need a ten-year plan today.
Start with smaller questions:
What do I want more of in my life?
What do I want less of?
What have I outgrown?
What would I try if I trusted myself a little more?
Sometimes clarity doesn't come before we move.
It develops as we begin taking small, intentional steps.
This Is Why I Created Elevare
My 6-Week Elevare Experience was created for women navigating exactly these kinds of transitions.
Career change. Separation. Empty nest. Relocation. Reinvention. Or simply that quiet realization that you're ready for something different.
Elevare isn't about me giving you the answers to your life.
It's about helping you create the clarity, awareness and confidence to discover your own answers—and begin moving toward them.
Together, we look at where you are, what you want, the beliefs that may be holding you back, and the intentional actions that can move you forward.
If you're standing at the beginning of a new chapter and thinking, “I don't know where to start,” perhaps this is your reminder:
You already have.
The moment you begin questioning what you truly want, something has started to shift.
And you aren't starting from zero.
You're starting from everything life has taught you so far.
